God brought me to a point of brokenness at the age 5, when I realized that Jesus was the only way that I could be saved from eternal punishment in hell for my sin, and I asked Him to come into my heart and save me. He did, and because God rebukes and chastens His own children (Revelation 3:19), there has never been any doubt in my mind about it.
Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence:
“...all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness [private property]...”
This is the foundation. Conservatism follows from Christianity, and it cannot last without Christian underpinnings.
If you don’t believe in a Creator to whom we are morally accountable (as is clearly stated in Genesis), then there is no basis for the value of human life. Those who reject God and embrace abortion and sexual perversion in all its forms are, at least, consistent in their beliefs. So are those who believe that government is the source of rights, and as such, has the ability to take those rights away–the right to life, free speech, free enterprise, property ownership, self defense, and others. It all hinges on your worldview: is there a Creator God, or is there not?
I am a Conservative because I am a Christian, and I am a Christian because God loved me and saved me. This has and will continue to shape my approach to every political issue.
